Parivaar Sahyadri, Maharashtra inaugurated the Self Advocacy program for the young adults in Navi Mumbai region on 10th September under the leadership of Ms. Pranita Madkaikar and Mrs. Charu Shah as coordinators for the Self Advocacy Training workshop for Persons with Intellectual Disabilities sponsored by Parivaar & CBM. Mr. Purushottam Burde Secretary Parivaar Sahyadri and Mr. Dashrath Parab Treasurer of Sahyadri Parivvar and President of SBPA ( Swami Brahmanand Parents Association) have initiated this program for Navi Mumbai.
The Training program is being conducted at Swami Brahmanand Pratishthan, CBD, Navi Mumbai.. Twenty-eight students and 7 special educators from 7 special schools of Navi Mumbai and Raigad District are participating in the program.
Initially a meeting was held with the Principals of Special Schools along with one Mentor and two parents from each school. Seven schools participated in the meeting. The sessions began from 10th September.
The first session was aimed towards Mentoring the Mentors..The Mentors were given imputs about the training program and their roles as mentors.
The second session which was held on the 17th September at SBP, Navi Mumbai, this was the first training session with the self advocates. It was a very enriching experience. Activities planned were practical situations presented with fun that provided an opportunity to make an assessment of the Listening skills, Speaking out in a group, Decision making etc.
The training program will be conducted on every Saturday from 10 am to 4 pm.
On the 22nd October elections of the self advocates will be held and a committee will be formed to represent the New Bombay Chapter. The elected committee will represent persons with Intellectual disabilities and voice their issues.
This committee will be supported by three volunteers - Mr. Behl, Mrs. Sujatha Bhaskar and Mrs. Vrushali Gorpade.
